The basics

As one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu is a must-visit for many travelers to Peru. Visitors are required to enter with an official tour guide in small groups of up to 16 people. Entry is permitted in hour-specific time slots and is limited to four hours.

Those pressed for time often visit the ancient ruins on a day trip by train from Cusco, but the 4-day trek along the legendary Inca Trail is another popular option. Some multi-day tour options also visit other regional highlights, such as Lake Titicaca and the Amazon rain forest.

2-Day Tour: Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu by Train
Well organised way to see the sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Hotel booked by company was good and clean but note it was very close to train line with trains running into the late evening, so we were woken up by trains passing a couple of times while we were trying to get a early night.

Private Guided Tour to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes
I wanted to personally thank Juan Carlos for making my visit to Manchu Picchu an unforgettable experience. He took a lot of time and care to make sure the day was planned perfectly, came to my hotel the night before to go over it. His knowledge of the history and ecology of the area was amazing. He took beautiful photos of me that will serve as a lifetime reminder of the magic of Machu Picchu. -Mike

2-Day Tour: Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu by Train
Visiting Machu Picchu was the most amazing thing we’ve ever done, no amount of photos can do justice to the absolute beauty and enormity of this sacred place. Breathtaking. The two day tour was brilliant and we have to give a special shout out to our guide Fabrizio who was AMAZING, sweet, knowledgable, funny and had the right balance of sharing information and letting us have time to explore and take photos. Highly recommended.

Private Guide for Machu Picchu - 3 hours
Our tour guide Manolo was great. He has been to the mountain thousands of times and is very knowledgeable about everything. We were able to learn about the Machu Picchu AND about his culture and village and how they all tie in. Great experience. He arrived to our hotel early and spoke fluent English. 😀

01 Day Tour to Machu Picchu The Inca City
We booked the tour only 3 days before and they managed to arrange the transportation and entrance tickets successfully. Our guide Tatiana is professional and knowledgeable. She also helped us to take a sneak peek of Machu Picchu from the higher platform which was not included in the ticket. Overall, the tour was well arranged and the trip was memorable.

2-day Inca Trail + Machu and Huyana Picchu

Inca Trail: 2-Day Machu Picchu with Panoramic Train
Great time on the 2-day Inca Trail tour. Strenuous but very doable hike. Good guide explaining facts of the flora/fauna of the mountain, history of the trail, general history of the people and of course Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu the second day was really crowded so we’re glad we did the Inca Trail the day prior for better views and more solitude. Huyana Picchu was an add-on and worth it. Guide doesn’t go with you there and it’s another strenuous (but much shorter) hike with amazing views.

How to get there

The quickest way to Machu Picchu is by train (PeruRail or IncaRail) from Cusco or Ollantaytambo, followed by a short bus ride or steep hike from the town of Aguas Calientes. For some, hiking the Inca Trail is as much a part of the Machu Picchu experience as the ruins themselves. This busy trail isn't the only trekking route; others such as the Salkantay trek or Lares route provide off-the-beaten-path alternatives.

When to get there

In high season between late May and early September, the Lost City of the Inca allows a maximum of 2,500 people to visit each day. June, July, and August are the busiest and driest months, while January is the wettest and February sees the closure of the Inca Trail. Spring and fall strike a nice balance between pleasant weather and manageable crowds.

Tips for the Inca Trail hike

If your dream Machu Picchu experience includes hiking the Inca Trail through the Sacred Valley, book well ahead of time, as the number of hikers is limited to 500 per day (including guides and porters). This difficult trail requires a fair amount of physical fitness, particularly given the high altitude in the Andes mountains. Give yourself at least two days in Cusco to acclimatize, and buy some coca leaves to help with any altitude sickness. Pick up a pair of walking sticks too—you'll be glad you did.
