The Basics

Travelers can spend time swimming, snorkeling, and diving at the crescent-shaped caldera, where ocean depths range from 10 to 60 feet. All trips include snorkel gear as well as a scenic boat ride, and the chance to splash in the clear blue water at one of Maui's best snorkel sites. Sail and snorkel adventures generally last about five hours and offer roundtrip transportation from hotels in Lahaina and Makena. Some Molokini snorkeling tours also offer scuba diving for certified divers.

Great snorkeling!

Great snorkeling with turtles! Moliniki had crystal clear water to see all kinds of colorful fish. We got to see a whale breaching several times, which was better than our whale watching tour!

4-Hour Molokini Crater plus Turtle Town Snorkeling Experience

Wow! We had an amazing time snorkeling at the crater and turtle town. Our guides were superb and very knowledgeable. The crew was all super nice, attentive, and knowledgable. Kept the ship/bathrooms clean the whole trip. Crew came around with drinks often. Thoroughly explained all instructions for snorkeling, weather conditions and expectations for the voyage. The hot cooked lunch after snorkeling was great to have after a long morning on the boat.

Molokini Crater and South Maui Coast Adventure from Kihei

Snorkeling off the backside of the Molokini crater is not to be missed!! The sea life was beautiful and hearing the whale song under the water was epic!! Are captain and crew were very knowledgeable and entertaining through out the trip and we are so thrilled we had the best time!! 10/10 recommend redline tours!!

Boat was comfortable, staff was nice, lots of snacks and drinks available. Average snorkeling at the crater. At the Kihei stop for turtles we saw numerous turtles. Overall a good day!

Great snorkeling with turtles! Moliniki had crystal clear water to see all kinds of colorful fish. We got to see a whale breaching several times, which was better than our whale watching tour!

Molokini crater snorkeling was fun. Too crowded though.. I wouldn’t recommend this if you are doing this for the first time.

Jace and Kelly were fantastic! Helpful, funny, informative- great experience! The tropical fish at the crater were incredible. The ease of these boats allows you to go to different spots quickly. Guaranteed wonderful snorkeling, turtles, and whales!!

Best snorkeling trip we've ever taken! Tim and Hannah were fun and knowledgeable. It was so great to have a small group, we could get in and out of the water quickly. I'm prone to seasickness and felt great the entire time, even on the smaller vessel. We saw so many whales, turtles, and fish. The most diverse wildlife of any snorkeling we've ever done. The kids really appreciated all of Tim's 'dad' jokes too 😂

How To Get There

Set off Maui's southern coastline, Molokini Crater is only accessible by boat, powerboat, or raft. Popular departure points include Maalaea Harbor and Kihei Boat Ramp. The Molokini snorkel tours that leave from Maalaea Harbor are on large, stable boats, whereas tours that leave from Kihei Boat Ramp are on small rafts that are faster and bumpier, shortening the overall travel distance.

Why Molokini Crater is Hawaii's Best Snorkeling Spot

Because Molokini is three miles offshore of Maui, you never know what you're going to find. Eagle rays, dolphins, and harmless reef sharks will frequently mingle with resident critters like parrotfish and octopus. In winter if you dive a few feet below water, or go on a scuba or snuba dive, the haunting song of humpback whales reverberates in the distance. Note that Hawaiian green sea turtles are rarely spotted at Molokini Crater, which is why many boats include a second snorkeling trip at "Turtle Town" off of Maui's southern coast.
