The Basics

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is commonly visited on day trips from nearby Mexico City. See the pyramids from above on a sunrise hot-air balloon ride before exploring the ruins on the ground, or opt for an early-morning tour with an archaeologist to learn the site's history and avoid the crowds that descend later in the day. Teotihuacán highlights include the Moon Plaza, the Sun Pyramid, the Palace of Quetzalpapalotl, and the Temple of Quetzalcoatl (the feathered serpent).

Teotihuacan Express private tour from Mexico City
Diana was a very informative guide, she always checked in to make sure we were prepared to move to the next areas of the temple complex and at each stop she used a deep knowledge of the Temples and reference photos and visual aids to really immerse you in the history and culture of Teotihuacan. Additionally I was stung by a small bee and she was very concerned and attentive to make sure the stinger was removed and the sting site was clean and that I was okay.

Teotihuacan, Tlatelolco, Guadalupe Shrine and Tequila Tasting Tour
Our guide, Manuel, was the best part of the trip because he made the history of the sites come alive for us. Yes, the Basilica and Teotihuacan were both amazing to see, but without his expert explanations we would have no context for what we were seeing.

Full-Day Teotihuacan Hot Air Balloon Tour from Mexico City Including Transport
Excellent experience. Transportation from Mexico City to Teotihuacan. Then a hot air balloon ride over the pyramids. The balloon ride was fun itself, but seeing the ruins from above was amazing. I highly recommend it. Then you get a ride to the ruins to see them on foot which was great as well. We booked late so we did not get up in a balloon immediately, we had to wait for a bit. But that was not a big problem, it mean we had the sky to ourselves.

Teotihuacan: Private Tour From Mexico City
Excellent guide, driver, lunch! Overall fantastic experience. Really liked that guide answered all our questions even if unrelated to Teotihuacan. Were planning on going there by ourselves, my son and I, but so glad that we chose this tour instead. Love that he used different entrance to site. Agree that it makes way more sense.

Private Tour Teotihuacan City of the Gods
We had a wonderful day. Ramon was a terrific guide, very knowledgeable and informative. Robert was an excellent driver, and the van was comfortable. Everything was well organized and on time. I would highly recommend this tour with local operator TuriTravel Mexico to Teotihuacan and Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Note that lunch was included (rather than breakfast).

Teotihuacan Pyramids tour
Daniel was kind enough to pick us up at the airport straight to the tour. He was very engaging and told us the history of the pyramids as soon as we started the drive. A must visit. Get Daniel so that you get to maximize your travel to Teotihuacan and Basilica de Guadalupe.

Teotihuacan Early Access tour with Tequila Tasting
The visit to Teotihuacan is a must if you visit Ciudad de México. I would prefer to skip the Tequila Tasting and the tourist restaurant and go back to the city, but there is not an option for that. The guide was nice and he explain all about Teotihuacan and answer the questions.

Teotihuacan Pyramids tour
Visiting Teotihuacan is on everyone’s list of “must do” activities in Mexico, and rightly so. However, engaging a good, knowledgeable guide is key to getting the most out of the experience. Daniel knew the ins and outs of the logistical side of things, so he was able to get us everywhere we needed to be without encountering long waits. He also has deep expertise in the history of Teotihuacan as well as in the ongoing research that continues to reveal more of the site’s secrets.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Teotihuacán is a must-see for history buffs and those interested in indigenous cultures.

  • The steep climb to the top of the Sun Pyramid includes more than 200 steps so requires a reasonable level of fitness.

  • Though the pyramids are not wheelchair accessible, the site itself and the restrooms are.

  • The site is closed on Mondays, and Mexican residents receive free admission on Sundays.

  • On weekends and holidays, a trolley takes visitors from the entry booths to various stops within the site for a small fee.

How to Get There

Located about 30 miles (50 kilometers) northeast of Mexico City, Teotihuacán is accessible by the scenic but long 132D, a winding freeway that can take well over an hour, and 85D, a toll road that will usually get you to the pyramids in about 50 minutes. It's also easy and convenient to take a bus from the Terminal Central del Norte in Mexico City; buses leave at least hourly and are geared toward tourists with limited Spanish skills.

When to Get There

Since locals receive free admission on Sundays, expect more crowds then. Popular Mexican public holidays, such as Independence Day (September 16), the week of Easter, and All Saints Day (November 1) also tend to attract more visitors. In general, in order to beat the crowds, arrive in the early morning either on a private tour or on your own.

Visiting the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe

About a 50-minute drive from Teotihuacán, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Basílica de Santa María de Guadalupe) is the most-visited religious site in Latin America. In 1531, a man professed to see a vision of the Virgin Mary at the site, and a second image is said to have appeared on his cloak. Millions of worshippers come to the basilica every year to see this sacred cloth, and Our Lady of Guadalupe Day is celebrated December 12.
