Piazza San Marco, Venice, 30124

The basics

Popular and perpetually busy, St. Mark’s Basilica is the most famous monument in Venice. You can reserve skip-the-line tickets in advance, or book an after-hours tour for private evening access. While the exterior is visited on just about every city sightseeing tour, a guided tour is the best way to experience the interior, given the complexity of its art and architecture.

The basilica anchors St. Mark’s Square, so you can easily combine a tour of the church with a gondola ride and a Doge’s Palace tour.

Great tour !
Great tour ! The after hours is the way to go because you get to walk in parts of the basilica that the day time crowds don’t! Our tour guide Nico was awesome and very knowledgeable and witty. He did a great job - and then also recommended a fried pizza place that was also awesome.

Legendary Venice St. Mark's Basilica with Terrace Access & Doge's Palace
This was a very informative tour with an extremely knowledgeable guide. The skip the queue was a good move as it was very busy even in March. The Basilica and Palace are a must see in Venice - spectacular. One downside was my partner's radio didn't work so we were trying to follow with one ear piece each!

Skip-the-Line: Doge's Palace & St. Mark's Basilica Fully Guided Tour
Iola was so sweet and helpful. The tour of doge palace and saint marks was definitely worth it to skip the line. Our tour guide knew so much. I don’t think I would have appreciated either site as much without her local and historical knowledge of both.

Venice Walking Tour plus Skip the Lines Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica Tours
This was an awesome tour... we started with the walking tour of the City. Then we cut the line to St. Marks. This includes both the down stairs tour and upstairs. Finally, we went to the Doge's Palace. The tour guide knew a lot and answered several questions. Definitely recommend.

When to get there

The basilica is most crowded at midday, so aim for a morning or late-afternoon visit. Summer is the busiest time, while Venice is relatively quiet from November through February (aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays, and during Carnival).

The Pala d’Oro

St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome is famous for Michelangelo's Pietà and Florence’s Duomo is known for Brunelleschi’s dome, but St. Mark’s Basilica’s greatest treasure—the stunning Pala d'Oro—is older than even those masterpieces. This glittering gold and enamel altarpiece from 976 AD is considered one of the most important, refined examples of Byzantine enamel in the world.
