Colosseum

Piazza del Colosseo, Rome, 00184

The Basics

As the second most popular attraction in Italy after only the Vatican, the Colosseum hosts some 4 million annual visitors, meaning that long lines are nearly inevitable without a skip-the-line tour. Choose from a number of tours suited to any age or interest, such as a Colosseum underground tour that heads beneath the arena floor to explore a network of passages; a small-group guided tour of the third tier; or a night tour that offers an eery experience and relief from the daytime heat. Consider group tours, self-guided audio tours, or private tours to gain an understanding of this well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater and its historical importance.

Small-Group Ancient Rome and Colosseum Underground Tour
Not my first tour of the Colosseum and I still learned a lot. Access to new areas that have opened up since before Covid and as ever you can really feel the atmosphere. Not the cheapest tour perhaps but great value. The guide (herself an archeologist) was clearly very passionate.

Colosseum Underground and Ancient Rome Semi-Private Tour MAX 6 PEOPLE GUARANTEED
This was a fantastic tour. They had just completed the walkways through the floor of the Colosseum during Covid. My kids are major history buffs and the guide was excellent with them. We all learned a lot and we were able to see things that were available because of our small group. I would not recommend for little little kids as it is a lot of walking and not stroller friendly. If your kids or you are into history this a great tour.

The VIP Colosseum Underground & Ancient Rome Small Group Tour
The colosseum tour was on a beautiful sunny day. We started out learning about what took place under the colosseum floor. Animals from different countries were held here at one end. The gladiators on the other. The engineering of the colosseum is truly amazing. It was awesome seeing it in person. The walk up to the main seating area was great. Our guide was very knowledgeable and showed a true passion for this place.

Colosseum Special Access on Gladiator's Arena Floor, with Roman Forum & Palaces
The tour guide was excellent! He explained details in a way that was easy to understand. Being able to be on the arena floor of the colosseum was amazing. We also enjoyed the breaks where we could look around on our own.

Colosseum Arena Floor, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill
This tour was amazing. Lorenzo really brought history to life for our family with 4 teenagers. You simply can not go to Rome and not go on the floor of the Colosseum. Also, we were able to skip-the-line and was brought right in to all of the stops. We were fully engaged the entire time!

Colosseum Special Access on Gladiator's Arena Floor, with Roman Forum & Palaces
David was our tour guide. He was awesome. He had a great sense of humor from the start of the tour. He explained things and kept you entertained the whole time. He knew great spots to get away from the crowds and always made sure everyone in the group left with some really great photos. Not only did he give us a great tour of the colosseum he even took the time to recommend great places to get food for lunch and dinner and where the market was. Great tour. Highly recommend.

Self-Guided Tour Colosseum Skip-the-Line Ticket
We didn’t wait that long to enter the Colosseum. Since it’s a self guided tour we are not in hurry, we take our time and take a lot of photo. Will recommend this tour for sure.

Colosseum private tour: handicap accessible
Guillermo was wonderful. He was knowledgeable and very patient. This trip is most likely my dads last overseas trip and he has always wanted to see the colosseum. This tour Made it accessible and was more informative than any tour I have had of the area before. I can not express my gratitude for the kindness and dignity he treats my father with. 100% recommended

Colosseum Underground Semi-Private Tour with Roman Forum & Gladiator Arena
Book this tour and if it’s possible to request a guide do so and ask for Paola. We learned so much and had such a great time and truly believe she was the reason. Knowledgeable, funny, kind. She carried an entire bag of books to reference for pictures to help us understand what different parts of Colosseum, Palantie Hill and Forum would have looked like in their prime. So engaging.

Colosseum & Heart of Rome
Our guide was amazing! He was very knowledgeable and patient with us wanting to take all the pictures we wanted. I couldn't have asked for a better guide. I really enjoyed the time spent at the colosseum and learned a substantial amount more than I had previously known. I would definitely take this tour again as there is still so much more to see.

When to Get There

Since the Colosseum is most crowded during the middle of the day, begin or end your Rome tour with a visit first thing in the morning or just before last entry (which is an hour before closing time) in the late afternoon. Alternatively, choose a night tour for a unique, less crowded experience. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while the site receives fewer crowds in November through February, aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays.
