Bioluminescent Bay (Mosquito Bay)

Puerto Mosquito, Vieques, Puerto Rico

The Basics

Any contact with the water—by the boat, a paddle, or a part of the body—makes the water glow bright neon blue and green. Jump in for a neon-lit swim, cruise over the water in a pontoon boat, or board a kayak to paddle through the bay. Nighttime kayak tours typically allow you to learn about the biology of dinoflagellates and their interaction with the Vieques ecosystem.

Magic
Truly a magical experience. Our guides were great. The beaches in Vieques were exquisite, but this experience was the highlight of our trip

Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Trip from Vieques
Actually the best part was the bus trip back. The whole bus was singing in Spanish. The guide Rocket worked very hard to make the whole experience enjoyable.

Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Trip from Vieques
We had the best tour guides, Rocket and Chris. They told us the history of mosquito bay and gave us a little science lesson as well. It was very bright in the sky so could not see the water clearly, but Rocket did an “experiment” with a tarp that allowed us to have a clear look at the water. Definitely recommend this trip to anyone coming to Vieques. A shoutout to Mario as well for helping with kayaks.

Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Trip from Vieques
Although they weren’t that great at greeting us on arrival they were great on the trip! We had a quarter moon so that takes a little away from the bioluminescence, but it was still very visible & they did a tarp covering so we could see it even better. Rocket gave us a history of the bay & bioluminescence & Juan used a laser star gazer & pointed out the constellations, both of which were very interesting! Take the 9 pm kayak tour if you can, unless you have no moon. Book this trip!

Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Trip from Vieques
This was a great event. Chris led the group and did a great job explaining about the bioluminescence Bay. Jack followed behind to watch for stragglers. We had a great time.

Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Trip from Vieques
Finding the checkin spot was a minor challenge and when Lulu came off the bus she was very unresponsive and downright rude. Ignoring or questions about whether or not we were on her tour. The bay itself was amazing!

Fun kayaking on Vieques

Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Trip from Vieques
We had a really fun time on this tour - the bioluminescence didn’t disappoint and our guide Lulu was fantastic! A really fun and well planned tour. Wear shorts - your legs will likely get wet and there aren’t really any mosquitos to worry about (don’t let the name of the bay fool you).

Overnight Bio Bay Kayak Tour in Vieques Island
This was by far the best part of our trip. Coming from a place with lots of light pollution, it was worth the trip just to see so many stars. But the bioluminescence was like out of a sci-fi movie. So breathtakingly incredible. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience. Our guides were so knowledgeable and helpful too. We will recommend this to everyone!

Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Trip from Vieques
This was so fun. Hilarious actually and that was due to the other fun people we met on the bus & paddling. There are some unexpected parts, but I will not mention. Do not want to spoil the surprise. So much laughter. The guides were kind, helpful. The information was fascinating.

Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Trip from Vieques
Our guide, Rocket, did an excellent job managing our tour, taking care of us (including a last-minute sick passenger and a couple who needed to switch kayaks midway through the trip), and providing fascinating information about the bay.

How to Get There

Mosquito Bay is located on the southern shore of Vieques, which can be reached by ferry from Fajardo on the main island of Puerto Rico. Reaching the bay is an adventure in itself that requires a 10-minute drive down a very bumpy and rutted 4WD track. Tours typically provide transportation to the bay from the town of Esperanza on Vieques Island.

When to Get There

The dinoflagellates in Bioluminescent Bay are active year-round but are best seen during the new moon, when the sky is darkest and the water glows brighter by comparison. Tours typically do not operate the day before, during, and after the full moon, when the organisms are difficult to see.

Must-See Vieques Attractions

Isla Vieques was under the control of the US Navy for 60 years and thus remains largely undeveloped. The small island is home to unspoiled rain forest dotted with pristine beaches and archaeological sites including the Hombre de Puerto Ferro, where skeletal remains up to 4,000 years old were discovered. Along with the famous bio bay, Vieques is host to some excellent snorkeling, especially at Blue Beach (Bahía de la Chiva).
